After a two-year delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Khandagiri Mela 2024 also known as the Khandagiri Jatra is starting in Bhubaneswar, the state capital, and will run until February 10th.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is organizing the fair and is preparing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for its smooth operation. Mayor Sulochana Das recently led a preparation meeting and issued guidelines for opera groups, stall owners, and visitors.
Opera groups must ensure their plays do not offend anyone’s sentiments and should avoid sexually suggestive or inciting dance moves. BMC has also restricted the use of high-volume dance parties.
Opera owners must hire security guards and volunteers to protect their actors. They are also advised to install CCTV cameras to monitor anti-social behavior. All opera party owners, vendors, and stall owners must obtain a NOC from the BMC, police, and fire departments before the event.
Roadside parking is prohibited, and violators will be fined. There is also a sound limit for the shows. Only five jatra pandals will be built this year.
